Embark on the Salkantay Trek Peru, a breathtaking adventure that will take you through diverse landscapes, from snow-capped peaks to lush cloud forests. The Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu offers an off-the-beaten-path alternative to the traditional Inca Trail and Classic Salkantay Trek. It will give you a chance to explore remote areas that few travelers witness.
Our journey will begin early, with the starting point at Mollepata, about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Cusco. As we hike towards the majestic Salkantay Mountain, standing 6,271 meters (20,574 feet) tall, we will feel the thrill of trekking at a high altitude. Throughout the trek, you’ll enjoy the support of a tour guide. They will share fascinating insights into the area’s history, flora, and fauna. On the second day, we will conquer the highest pass, Salkantay Pass, at 4,600 meters (15,091 feet).
After savoring the sense of accomplishment at the summit, we will descend into warmer climates, passing rivers, waterfalls, and tropical vegetation. That evening, we will relax our muscles in soothing hot springs, enjoying a well-earned break from the trails.
During the trek, you can leave unnecessary items behind as our team will provide duffle bags for personal belongings. We will also have a rain poncho at hand, ensuring unpredictable mountain weather misses us off guard. Every group will carry a first aid kit for added safety. Having travel insurance is recommended for peace of mind.
On the final day, the adventure will culminate with a thrilling visit to Machu Picchu. It is the crowning jewel of the Inca Empire. Arriving in the early morning, we will explore the ancient citadel. We will have ample time to capture stunning photos and immerse ourselves in its mysteries.
After visiting Machu Picchu, we will board a train back to Ollantaytambo and drive the rest of the way back to Cusco. The trek will conclude around 8:00 pm, marking the end of a transformative experience.

From Mollepata, we continue for another hour by car to Challacancha, situated at 3,380 meters (11,090 feet). This will be the starting point of our trek.
Along the way, we’ll pass through two scenic valleys, Valle de Mollepata, and Valle de Challacancha. We will be taking in stunning panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and farmlands. Once at Challacancha, we’ll lace up our hiking boots and begin our adventure on foot.

Here, we’ll have time to relax and enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by our team’s chef. After resting and soaking in the breathtaking views, we will prepare for an afternoon hike to one of the trek’s highlights.

The final day of the Salkantay Trek 4 Days has arrived. We will wake up early to make the most of our visit to Machu Picchu, the legendary Lost City of the Incas. As the first rays of sunlight touch the ancient stones, we will enter this architectural masterpiece. This is considered a wonder of the world.
Built atop the mountains, Machu Picchu reveals its secrets through its neighborhoods, plazas, terraces, and observatories. Rediscovered on July 24, 1911, by Hiram Bingham, this site continues to inspire awe and curiosity.
Our guided tour will take us through the most important areas of the citadel. We will explore its intricate buildings and learn about the Inca civilization, their ingenious engineering, and spiritual practices. After the guided portion, we will have free time to wander the site at our own pace, take photos, or simply absorb the mystical atmosphere of this ancient city.
After our time at Machu Picchu, we will return to Aguas Calientes. Here, we will have time for lunch at a local restaurant (not included) and explore the town’s charming streets. Later in the afternoon, we will board the train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo. The train ride, which departs at 2:55 pm, offers spectacular views of the Sacred Valley as we wind through lush landscapes and towering mountains.
Upon arriving at Ollantaytambo, our staff will meet us and drive us back to Cusco. The journey will end at Plaza Regocijo, where we will say goodbye, carrying memories of an unforgettable adventure through the Salkantay Trek Peru. This trek has taken us from snow-capped peaks to cloud forests, and now, to one of the world’s most iconic archaeological sites.
No, you do not need a special permit for the Salkantay Trek Peru, unlike the Inca Trail, which has restricted access. The Salkantay Trek is open year-round, and anyone can hike it without worrying about limited permits. However, you will still need to purchase an entrance ticket for Machu Picchu, which should be booked in advance, especially during the high season from April to October.
While a permit is not required for the trek itself, booking through a licensed tour operator is highly recommended. Tour companies take care of logistics such as transportation, meals, accommodations, and entrance fees. Additionally, they ensure you have a professional tour guide, access to campsites, and support services like first aid kits, porters, and duffle bags, making your journey smoother and safer.
Yes, it is highly recommended to book the Salkantay Trek in advance, especially if you plan to trek during the high season (April to October). While the trek itself does not require a permit, spaces can fill up quickly because many tour operators coordinate entrance tickets to Machu Picchu, train tickets, and accommodations in Aguas Calientes. Booking early ensures you secure your spot and avoid missing out on your preferred dates.
During peak season, services such as train tickets and entrance to Machu Picchu may sell out weeks in advance. Booking ahead also gives you time to prepare properly, as most tour operators provide duffle bags, guides, and recommendations for essentials like travel insurance. For those traveling during the low season (November to March), booking is still advisable to ensure you have the best service and avoid last-minute arrangements.
The Salkantay Trek and the Inca Trail both lead to Machu Picchu, but they offer different experiences in terms of scenery, difficulty, and accessibility. The Inca Trail is famous for following original Inca pathways and passing through several archaeological sites along the way. However, it requires a permit that sells out months in advance, and the trail is limited to 500 people per day, including guides and porters. The Salkantay Trek Peru, on the other hand, does not require a permit, making it a more flexible option for those seeking spontaneity or late bookings.
The Salkantay Trek offers more varied landscapes, including high-altitude mountains, cloud forests, and tropical valleys, with fewer archaeological sites along the route. It is generally considered more challenging, with higher altitudes (such as Abra Salkantay Pass at 4,650 meters / 15,250 feet) and longer hiking days. However, the solitude and stunning scenery of Salkantay Mountain and Humantay Lagoon make the experience rewarding. In contrast, the Inca Trail offers a more immersive historical experience, walking in the footsteps of the Incas. Both treks culminate at Machu Picchu, but the Inca Trail allows direct entry through the Sun Gate, offering a dramatic first view of the ancient citadel, whereas the Salkantay route reaches Aguas Calientes first, followed by a separate visit to Machu Picchu.
Preparing for the Salkantay Trek 4 Days involves both physical training and careful packing to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. This trek takes you through challenging terrain at high altitudes, so proper preparation will help you adapt and make the most of the adventure. Start by engaging in cardio exercises like running, swimming, or cycling several weeks before the trek to build endurance. Incorporate hiking practice with a backpack on uneven surfaces to simulate the trail experience. If possible, try to hike at higher altitudes beforehand to help your body acclimatize to reduced oxygen levels.
Packing wisely is essential. Bring well-fitted hiking boots to prevent blisters, breathable layers for changing weather conditions, and a rain poncho in case of sudden showers. Essential items include a first aid kit, travel insurance, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a hat for sun protection. Prepare for cold nights with warm clothing, including thermal layers and gloves. Tour operators typically provide duffle bags for personal belongings, so pack only the essentials for the trek, leaving unnecessary items behind. Staying hydrated and drinking coca tea along the way will also help combat altitude sickness. With proper preparation, you’ll be ready to enjoy the stunning landscapes and cultural wonders of the Salkantay Trek Peru.
