The Salkantay Trek typically takes 5 days and 4 nights, covering approximately 74 kilometers (46 miles) from the starting point to Machu Picchu. However, there are shorter and alternative versions:
•This is the most popular itinerary. It involves 4 days of trekking through diverse terrains (including the high Salkantay Pass) and a visit to Machu Picchu on the 5th day.
•This version skips some portions of the traditional route to make the trek shorter while still ending at Machu Picchu.
•The 2 Day trek includes a drive to a higher point of the trail, minimal trekking, and a visit to Machu Picchu on the second day.
The 5-day version remains the most recommended for travelers seeking to experience the full range of landscapes—snow-capped peaks, tropical cloud forests, and scenic valleys.
The Salkantay Trek is considered challenging due to several factors:
1.Altitude
•The trek reaches a high point of 4,630 meters (15,190 feet) at the Salkantay Pass.
•Altitude sickness can affect some trekkers, especially during the ascent to the pass.
2.Distance and Duration
•The trek covers approximately 74 kilometers (46 miles) over 4-5 days.
•Daily hikes range from 6 to 9 hours, depending on the itinerary and trekking pace.
3.Terrain
•The route varies from steep ascents through rocky paths to slippery descents in tropical cloud forests.
•Some sections are exposed to cold winds at higher altitudes, while the lower sections are warmer and more humid.
4.Weather Conditions
•Temperatures at night can drop below freezing at higher altitudes.
•The trail may be affected by rain, especially during the rainy season (November to March).
•The trek is suitable for experienced hikers or adventurous beginners who are physically prepared.
•Cardiovascular training and practice hikes at higher elevations before the trek can make a big difference.
•Acclimatization in Cusco (3,400 meters) for a couple of days is highly recommended before starting the trek.
While the Salkantay Trek is challenging, it’s also rewarding due to the stunning scenery and variety of landscapes. With proper preparation, determination, and a slow, steady pace, most hikers can complete it successfully.
The Salkantay Trek is generally safe if proper precautions are taken, but it does come with certain risks due to its remote nature, high altitude, and challenging terrain. Here’s a breakdown of the potential risks and how to mitigate them:
1.Altitude Sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness – AMS)
•The trek reaches 4,630 meters (15,190 feet) at the Salkantay Pass, where altitude sickness can occur.
•Symptoms: Headache, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath.
•Prevention:
•Spend 2-3 days acclimatizing in Cusco before starting the trek.
•Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol.
•Consider medication like Diamox if prone to AMS.
2.Challenging Weather Conditions
•Temperatures can drop below freezing at night, especially at higher campsites.
•Rain and fog are common during the wet season (November to March), making trails slippery.
•Tip:
•Bring layered clothing for cold weather and a rain poncho or jacket for wet conditions.
3.Remote Location and Limited Access to Help
•Some sections of the trek are isolated, with limited mobile signal and access to medical assistance.
•Tip:
•Trek with a reliable tour company that provides first-aid equipment and guides trained in emergency protocols.
4.Physical Strain and Injuries
•Long hiking days on uneven, rocky terrain can result in muscle strain, blisters, or twisted ankles.
•Tip:
•Wear well-fitted hiking boots and use trekking poles to reduce strain.
5.Wildlife and Insects
•The lower sections of the trek pass through cloud forests where insects and mosquitoes are present.
•Tip:
•Use insect repellent and wear long sleeves and pants.
How to Stay Safe on the Salkantay Trek
•Choose a reputable trekking company with experienced guides and proper equipment.
•Stick to marked trails and follow the guidance of your trek leaders.
•Travel in a group rather than attempting the trek alone, as help will be more accessible in case of emergencies.
•Carry travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking.
The Salkantay Trek is not inherently dangerous, but it can become risky if trekkers are unprepared or overexert themselves. With the right preparation, acclimatization, and an experienced guide, it is safe and highly rewarding for those who undertake it.
