Inca Jungle Trek to Machu Picchu – Inca Jungle Trail

On the second day of the Inca Jungle Trek to Machu Picchu, we will begin our hike early, following a path that blends local trails with sections of the historic Inca Jungle Trail. As we ascend, the scenery transforms, revealing lush vegetation and stunning views of the Wankar Q’asa canyon. This segment of the trek offers some of the most impressive landscapes of the entire journey, with panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains.

After about an hour of descending, we will reach the Waka Yupana sector. Here, our transport will be waiting to take us to the lively town of Santa Teresa. Once we arrive, we will enjoy a well-deserved lunch to refuel for the afternoon adventure.

After lunch, you will have the option to experience an exciting zip line adventure. This thrilling activity allows you to glide along cables anchored between mountains, reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h (37 mph). The experience lasts about two hours, and the departure and arrival points are either ground or aerial platforms on rock faces. It’s an optional but highly recommended part of the trek for those seeking adrenaline.

Later in the afternoon, we will head to the Cocal Mayo Thermal Baths, a tranquil spot to relax and unwind after the day’s adventures. You will have time to enjoy the soothing, crystal-clear waters in natural pools surrounded by tropical vegetation. As the day ends, we will return to Santa Teresa, where we will have dinner and spend the night.

Along the way, you will feel immersed in the beauty of the surrounding forests and valleys, with the fresh mountain air invigorating each step.

After exploring Llactapata, we will descend toward the Hidroelectrica train station, where we will stop for a relaxing lunch. One of the highlights along this route is a stunning 300-meter (984 ft) waterfall, which generates hydroelectric power for the Cusco region. This natural wonder adds an extra touch of magic to the trail, blending adventure with nature’s marvels.

Once we complete our lunch at Hidroelectrica, you will have two options to reach Aguas Calientes. If you feel energized, we will continue hiking along the train tracks for about three hours, enjoying the scenic path through the cloud forest. Alternatively, you can take the train for a more leisurely journey, available for an additional cost. This part of the trek offers peaceful surroundings, with the sounds of nature accompanying us all the way to Aguas Calientes.

We will arrive in Aguas Calientes by the late afternoon. You can relax at your accommodation and take time to explore the charming streets of this town nestled at the foot of Machu Picchu. In the evening, we will enjoy dinner together, preparing for the final day’s highlight: visiting Machu Picchu.

You will have the option to hike up from Aguas Calientes or take a short bus ride to reach Machu Picchu. As the sun rises, the mist will lift to reveal the magnificent stone structures and breathtaking views of Machu Picchu Mountain.

Once inside, our knowledgeable guide will take you on a tour through the ruins. We will explore key areas such as the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana stone, and the agricultural terraces, learning about the fascinating history of the Inca civilization. You will also have time to wander on your own, take photos, or even climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain if you have secured a permit in advance.

After spending the morning at Machu Picchu, we will return to Aguas Calientes for lunch. You can take a moment to enjoy the town’s relaxed atmosphere before we head to the train station. We will board the train from Aguas Calientes, traveling through the picturesque landscapes of the Sacred Valley.

Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, our private transport will be waiting to take us back to Cusco. We will return to Cusco by the evening, marking the end of this unforgettable adventure along the Inca Jungle Trail.
